SENATOR CREIGHTON’S PRIORITIES SET FOR WEEKEND HEARINGS
Austin, TX – The Texas Senate will hold ten weekend hearings which include Senator Creighton’s legislative priorities. On Saturday, Senator Creighton will present Senate Bill 8 in the Business & Commerce committee. The legislation affirms Texas’ right to prohibit coverage for elective abortions offered through the federally mandated exchange.
“For once, Washington, D.C. is allowing states to make a choice in healthcare,” said Senator Creighton. “It’s time Texas puts into statute a policy for separate elective abortion coverage.”
The Affordable Care Act allows for states to set their own parameters for elective abortion coverage in the marketplace. Texas is one of 25 states yet to enact legislation to ban elective abortion coverage. Senate Bill 8 will require elective abortion coverage to be separately purchased as an optional, supplemental plan.
“No Texan should be forced to pay for insurance that covers elective abortions,” said Governor Abbott. “As Governor, I will always fight to protect Texas values and ensure Texans are not coerced into funding a procedure that ends the life of an unborn child. I am grateful to Sen. Creighton for working on this important issue, and look forward to this bill reaching my desk.”
Also on Saturday, the Senate Select Committee on Government Reform will convene to hear several bills including Senate Bill 1 to reform property taxes in the state. Senator Creighton is a co-author of this legislation and has been committed to reducing property taxes for Texans since he began serving in the Senate.
On Sunday, Senate Bill 6 will be presented in the Senate State Affairs Committee. Senator Creighton is a co-author of this legislation which reforms the authority of municipalities to annex territory and allows for a vote by citizens affected by proposed annexation.
Senator Brandon Creighton represents Senate District 4, which encompasses Chambers, Jefferson and parts of Montgomery, Harris and Galveston Counties.
