Senate Bill 8: Pro-Life Insurance Reform
Austin, TX – Today, Senator Brandon Creighton (R-Conroe) filed Senate Bill 8 to protect pro-life Texans from unknowingly or unwillingly subsidizing others’ abortion coverage through their insurance premiums and tax dollars.
“Texans deserve the right to decide where their insurance and tax dollars go,” said Senator Creighton. “As a pro-life Texan, I don’t believe anyone should be forced to pay for another’s elective abortion.”
The federal Affordable Care Act includes a provision for states to opt out of default abortion coverage. More than half of the states have opted out. This bill would ensure that ACA-subsidized plans, state employees and private basic health insurance plans do not include coverage for elective abortions.
“We are not yet finished with the disaster of ObamaCare. I intend to reform health insurance now by creating a law to protect the preference of those that do not wish to offer this type of subsidy on behalf of others,” concluded Senator Creighton. “After this legislation is passed into law, I’ll sleep better at night.”
At the time of filing, the legislation had nineteen Senators listed as joint authors.
Senator Brandon Creighton represents Senate District 4, which encompasses Chambers, Jefferson and parts of Montgomery, Harris and Galveston Counties.
