Austin, TX –  Senator Creighton made the following statement after Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill  214 into law:

“Today is a proud day for Texas,” said Senator Creighton. “We joined half the nation in requiring those who seek elective abortion health insurance coverage to purchase a separate, supplemental policy.”

The bill was signed into law the day before the close of the first called special legislative session.  The Legislature has been working to pass this critical legislation for more than a decade. The issue was one of twenty on Governor Greg Abbott’s call for this special legislative session.

“Representative John Smithee, Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and I worked on this important legislation to ensure pro-life Texans do not contribute to premiums in standard insurance plans which fund a procedure to end the life of an innocent, unborn child.”

Senator Creighton is the Senate sponsor to House Bill 214 and author of Senate Bill 8 which prohibits certain qualified health plans from providing coverage for elective abortions. The law goes into effect December 1, 2017.
