Senator Creighton Pleased With Progress But Says There Is Still Work To Be Done

The Woodlands, TX – Yesterday afternoon, Senator Creighton (R-Conroe) met with Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, State Representative Dan Huberty (R-Kingwood), and Houston City Councilman Dave Martin at Houston City Hall to discuss the ongoing effort to restore and reinforce the Lake Houston and Kingwood areas. This meeting occurred following Senator Creighton’s trip to Washington, D.C. where he advocated for bettering Texas’ funding formula from the recently passed disaster relief spending package.

“This meeting was a good opportunity for Houston city leadership and Lake Houston’s state legislators to sit down and discuss ways to rebuild our communities from damage caused by Harvey’s devastating flooding,” said Senator Creighton. “This week marked six months since the storm hit the Texas coast. Our meeting was another in an ongoing series. While we made significant progress in improving infrastructure from newly available federal dollars, there is still a lot of work to be done.”

Also in attendance were Bill Kelly, City of Houston Government Relations, Stephen Costello, Chief Resiliency Officer, and Carol Haddock, Director of Houston Public Works. The group discussed various flood mitigation options including lowering the Lake Houston water level, dredging the San Jacinto River, and adding more gates at the Lake Houston Spillway Dam.

“We were able to bring attention to the massive amounts of silt that has collected in the San Jacinto River basin and intensifying flooding,” said Creighton. “I appreciate the Mayor’s immediate response to our request to release water from Lake Houston to alleviate flooding from recent rain. I also appreciate everyone’s alignment and cooperation towards dredging parts of the San Jacinto River basin.”

For more information on the flood mitigation items discussed at the meeting, please attend the town hall meeting at the Kingwood Community Center, March 6th, at 6:00 p.m.
