The recent resignation of Texas State Senator Tommy Williams prompted Gov. Rick Perry to call a special election in May of 2014 to fill it.
That’s when Texas State Rep. Brandon Creighton (R-16) switched his campaign for agricultural commissioner to pursue the open senate seat.
“I think that seat is very important to Texas and its economy,” Creighton said at a Kingwood TEA Party meeting Thursday at The Overlook in Atascocita. “I talked about it with my family and we decided that we wanted to stay local and work local.”
Creighton has represented Montgomery county in the Texas House of Representatives since 2006. The opportunity to be involved in major projects in Montgomery County and southeast Texas was key in Creighton’s decision to pursue the senate seat.
“We are working on solving growth issues,” Creighton said. “Montgomery County is the fifth-fastest growing county in the nation. We have the largest transportation effort in the nation right now that is not funded by federal dollars (the Grand Parkway). That shows how resilient Texas is. Texas can solve problems of huge magnitude with no federal dollars. There is much to be proud of and much to protect.”
As a businessman in the Texas House of Representatives, Creighton argued for regulations that protected small business from frivolous lawsuits and lowered small business taxes to create a more competitive environment and lure more entrepreneurs and job creators to do business in Texas.
“The framers of (Texas) made it to where representatives were expected to have their own jobs and own businesses,” Creighton said. “We are expected to live under the laws we pass. So there has to be some sense and sensibility and common sense.”
Creighton stressed to the Kingwood TEA Party members the importance of filling Williams’ post with a conservative candidate.
“There is no greater threat to Texas’ economy than Obamacare,” Creighton said. “That’s why I argued to block Obamacare Medicaid expansion in Texas … Political pundits and analysts know that Texas is the last stand,” Creighton said. “If Texas turns blue, we will not win the White House for at least a generation if not more. As Texas goes, so goes the nation. America needs Texas to survive.”
Creighton currently serves as the GOP majority leader in the Texas House of Representatives, where he has served since 2006.
Senate District 4 takes in parts of Montgomery County and Harris County along with all of Chambers County and Jefferson County. Some of the communities in the district are Splendora, New Caney, Porter, Kingwood, Humble, Atascocita, Crosby and Huffman.
