DES MOINES, Iowa (KXAN) — Texas Senator Ted Cruz gathered the most GOP votes in the Iowa Caucus, the first hurdle on the race for President. Just an hour northeast of Des Moines is Green Mountain, Iowa. The caucus there is of particular interest to us Monday. One hundred and twenty-one Iowans showed up to vote in Green Mountain. Ted Cruz took away 46 of the votes, the most out of anyone in the town’s American Legion Hall.

They showed up on a cold, foggy night to get their ballots. People stood for Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, stumped for Florida Senator Marco Rubio and spoke Donald Trump, who came away with more than 30 votes, but Texas State Senator Brandon Creighton helped push the vote towards his fellow Texan.

“I traveled all the way here in tough times, with little kids, and it’s never the right time. But I wanted to stand before you hat in hand and tell you why I believe in him,” said Sen. Creighton, R-Conroe.

Creighton says Cruz can be trusted to stop what this room thinks is an insane and over-reaching EPA.

“We need someone to stand on principle, on faith, on character and integrity, with conviction,” he told the crowd.

It was a working class audience, one that favored Trump going in. Iowans turned in their ballots. The vote was close here and all over Iowa as every speech made a difference when the first votes were cast.

“These states around the country are waiting to follow your lead. God bless you and god bless the great state of Iowa,” said Sen. Creighton.

This is only night one in almost a year of voting. But whoever takes the momentum out of community centers like this could be the next President.
